Paul S. Donhauser, age 71, passed away at home, surrounded by his family and
close friends, on Thanksgiving morning November 22, 2007 due to complications
from cancer treatment. Paul was born on May 6, 1936 to Frieda and Karl Donhauser
in Berlin, Germany. He immigrated to Sheboygan, WI in 1948, with his mother and
brother from post-war Germany. Paul graduated from Sheboygan Central High School
and earned his undergraduate degree in Studio Arts and Art Education from
UW-Milwaukee. He married Lois Killips on January 23, 1960 and continued his
education with a Master's degree from UW-Madison and his PhD from Illinois State
University. Paul taught design and ceramics at UW-Oshkosh until 2004. During 40
years with the University of Wisconsin system, he touched countless lives
including students and colleagues. In addition to teaching, he had an
outstanding career as an artist, working in both clay and painting, exhibiting
in regional, national and international competitions. Paul was a Rosebush
Professor and earned virtually every honor the field of ceramics has to offer,
notably a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Visual Arts and the
Grand Prize at the International Ceramics Competition in Faenza, Italy. His work
is owned and displayed by countless private collectors as well as the
Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C. and the Prudential Plaza in Chicago,
IL. Paul was one of the longest kidney-transplant survivors. He was a mentor to
us all with his sense of humor, courage, and strength over the years.
Remembering him with special love are his wife of 47 years, Lois; daughters
Stephanie (Laura) of Madison, WI and Jennifer (Eric) of Anchorage, AK; one
brother Ted (Joanne) of Elkhart Lake; numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews, family
members in Germany, home healthcare aides Laurie and Tiffany, and many, many
close friends. A Memorial Service and Celebration of Paul's Life will be held on
Saturday December 15, 2007 at Robbin's Restaurant (1810 Omro Rd. Hwy 41/21 exit,
Oshkosh) from 1:00 P.M. until 4:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers, the family requests
donations to the Paul Donhauser Art-Student Scholarship Fund through the
UW-Oshkosh Foundation. Call Jennifer @ 907-227-2839.
Art is my life. It's my existence; it influences my perceptions and responses.
But that doesn't mean I don't like baseball.
